Family Voices, 1,200 strong in Utah, receives support from Title V/CSHCN, Medicaid, the UAP's Early Intervention Research Institute, and the NICU at LDS Hospital. More than 6,500 families have received information about Family Voices via newsletters. Managed care in Utah can be helpful, because knowledgeable care Coordinators assist families when they advocate for children's needs, and Medicaid managed care plans are often more flexible than fee-for-service plans for our children. Still, at times the system lacks continuity, forcing families to give up trusted providers. Commercial plans focus on cost-effectiveness, many times at the expense of children and families. Utah has a long waiting list for family support services and the DD/MR waiver, with no relief in sight. Fragmentation between the medical and education systems leads to debates about medical and educational necessity, who should provide certain health services, how to pay for and access assistive technology, and how to collaborate on IEPs. Utah Family Voices is proud to be a partner in the "Every Child Deserves a Medical Home" training.
